TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

FINDING YOUR UNIQUE VOICE

IMG_4774.jpg

The classroom should be a brave space for students to collaborate, discuss, perform, and imagine worlds that are

new and worlds that reflect their own ideals and experiences.

As an educator of the arts, I will provide a classroom experience where each student can discover their own unique voice.

Furthermore, imagination will be at the core of all

lesson plans and educational endeavors.

GAINING SKILLS FOR LIFE

Through acting-based, directing-based, and design-based unit plans, each student will be able to understand the significance of

community building, public speech,

and respecting multiple perspectives on one topic.

These skills will give students the confidence they need to excel well into their adulthood as they meet new people, take on a profession, and learn how to become an integral part of society.

SUPPORTING THEATRICAL PROCESSES

IMG_8285.jpg

In the classroom, all artistic processes will be celebrated. Students will come into the space with their own lived experiences and pre-existing knowledge of theatre.

It is imperative that each child receives support

from the teacher and their peers.

I hope to foster an environment where students find the courage to perform for an audience while respecting all personal journeys. Classroom activities, rehearsals, and presentations will be a time for students to explore without judgement or harsh criticism.

ARTISTIC STRENGTHS OF THE INDIVIDUAL

Diversity will always be at the forefront of the educational experience. I intend to incorporate materials where students can see themselves represented, as well as seeing the possibilities that extend

beyond the classroom walls.

Students will have the opportunity to devise theatrical works

that tackle societal issues, and our classroom will

be a place to discuss and take action.

As a class, we will always strive for positive social changea.

INCLUSIVITY IN THE ARTS

IMG_8348.jpg

A theatre teacher should be supportive and nurturing, but they should also make space for students to ask questions, make mistakes, and grow. Students will take on projects that support

their individual needs as an artist

I will work with them to discover their strengths,

sharpen their innate skills, and leave room for

exploration into unknown territories.

Lastly, I will initiate check-ins and provide feedback for students to determine the next steps they need to take to

reach their full potential as artists.

Diversity will always be at the forefront of the educational experience. I intend to incorporate materials where students can see themselves represented, as well as seeing the possibilities that extend beyond the classroom walls. Students will have the opportunity to devise theatrical works that tackle societal issues, and our classroom will be a place to discuss and take action. This can only be accomplished if Identity, Diversity, Justice, and Action are integrated into each lesson plan (Chairiello et al.). My curriculum will also highlight important works from multiple viewpoints and authors. This selection of voices will be a catalyst for us to brainstorm and perform theatrical works written by the students. As a unit, we will strive for social change.

The classroom is not only intended for aspiring or established performers. Our work in class is open to all students who have the desire to learn, appreciate theatre as an art form, and investigate new methods in using theatre for change.

Each student will be in a different part of their performance journey, and our work will steer clear of competition.

Every individual will be loved, supported, and celebrated for taking risks and contributing to the dramatic arts.
